The man (69) who died in Potchefstroom on Friday morning was killed with an iron rod.
His wife, 67, was rushed by helicopter in a critical condition to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg after also being attacked with the iron rod.
Joe van Dyk, Adriaan and Lilly Smit’s son-in-law, confirmed what had happened.
“The attack happened shortly after 04:00. A camera in the street shows how a thug jumped over the wall, “ van Dyk said.
The thug apparently tampered with the owner’s bakkie. “My father-in-law investigated when the thug picked up an iron that lay under a table and assaulted him. He dragged him into the house. My mother-in-law became involved and he assaulted her as well, “said Van Dyk.
The iron rod with which he assaulted her broke and the thug took another iron rod and further assaulted her.
“The thug grabbed the bakkie’s keys and then fled in it.”
According to Van Dyk, the neighbor heard the dogs barked, jumped over the wall and investigated. “When he saw the blood, he returned to his house and made alarm.”
Trudi Botha, the owner of Electro Security, confirmed that the security company received an emergency call from a neighbor of the couple at 05:30.
“Our reaction vehicle arrived at the scene with the police. It was a horrific scene with everything covered in blood,“ said Botha.
Botha distributed information regarding the stolen vehicle to all safety networks and shortly thereafter Suzette Oosthuizen, Ward 2’s coordinator of the AfriForum Neighborhood Watch, confirmed that neighborhood drivers had seen a similar vehicle in their area.
“We were informed before 06:00 that our members needed assistance because they were following an Isuzu bakkie. The driver of the bakkie lost control and rolled the vehicle. It, however, landed on its wheels and he drove away,“ Oosthuizen said.
The driver of the bakkie then collided with a truck but continued on his way with the neighborhood guard in close pursuits. Shortly afterward, he again lost control and again rolled the bakkie. The thug then fled on foot into the surrounding bushes.
“Neighborhood Watch caught him and he was arrested by CB Security.”
